Cuneyt Ulsever: Government Has No Cyprus Policy

“…The government has problems on the issues of Cyprus and Iraq. On both cases it has no clear decision. It is an important contradiction that the government, which showed its will and spends efforts to enter EU, cannot decide on a policy on the Cyprus issue, which is one of the biggest obstacles for Turkey’s bid for EU…Like it is the case at all times, Turkey is lonely in her Cyprus policy. From now on, no matter what surprises Turkey and Rauf Denktas brought about, no one will take them seriously. The ball of Cyprus will first bump to the pillar of goalpost in the December 2003 elections of Turkish Cyprus, and then will be a goal in our goalpost when the Greek Cyprus is admitted to EU in May 2004. Our country, which allowed this ball to be a goal, will get nothing from EU in December 2004. From then on Turkey will have to persuade Greek Cyprus, in addition to Greece, in every voting in EU.”
