Ergenekon, at a turning point...

Questions in the mind of the public grow. Maybe I touch on the same points over and over but we have come to a very important stage. Explanations made by the Istanbul law society and the judicial milieu are very serious and the Ergenekon investigation and trial period bring about such a harsh criticism for the procedure applied by the prosecutor that doubts and concerns are deepening in the public opinion.

Those taken into custody within the frame of Ergenekon create a big chaos. Impossible names, and those viewed as criminals in the eyes of the public and involved in dirty jobs are being mixed in the same pot. There are some who are being held in prison for eight or nine months without even knowing why... and more importantly, it is uncertain what kind of a relationship exists between those into custody and what kind of organization they have planned. The general impression at the moment is that the prosecution doesn’t seem to have completed its file yet and wants to enlarge it by taking more people into custody during the court hearing. We again go round in circles and get stuck in the same concerns.

Haberin Devamı

? Is there new evidence and concrete data that the prosecutor knows about but does not reveal?

? Why is the public not being told in some way that some people known to be "sharp-tongued" have gathered and formed a terror organization in order to overthrow the state?

? Or are we facing huge incompetency and disorder by the prosecution?

Or else, if not proved otherwise, we won’t be able to erase the belief that the Ergenekon case persists only to intimidate the opposition and signaling that "we also can get our hands on the military and punish them if need be."

Whatever you may say, I believe that in this country organization types like Susurluk and Ergenekon exist and dirty jobs are done with the support of the state. These people have committed murder in the name of protecting the state, have threatened those opposing the formal opinion, and have caused great distress. I believe from the bottom of my heart that these organizations should be revealed and punished.

During the first months of the Ergenekon investigation I was very hopeful. I thought, light would be shed on dark matters. Especially when people were taken into custody and I said "Ha, finally it happens..." Then it started to get weird. I started to ask the question everybody was asking, "Why are these people taken into custody." Now the prosecution needs to convince the public. We need to receive answers to our questions.

Red line between Ankara and Paris
Extremely interesting developments in the Turkish-French relationship are taking place. Some time ago I wrote about Sarkozy’s promises to Erdoğan regarding the European Union. And actually France provided negotiations for Turkey’s full membership without any change in doubt. He presented two new headlines in negotiations. No secret attempts were made by him to prevent the membership. Full membership for Turkey was even mentioned in the announcement at the summit held near the end of 2008. I could prolong this list but what I want to stress here encompasses a brand new development.

In a nutshell, regarding the Middle East there is a never before seen closeness between Ankara and Paris, in fact, a strategic cooperation is blossoming. Sarkozy called Erdoğan last Sunday before taking off to Damascus in order to find a diplomatic solution for the Gaza invasion. Erdoğan just got back from his Middle East tour. Sarkozy asked him about his impression and they decided to cooperate. The most important part during this conversation was that the French President wanted Davutoğlu, who’s relationship with Syrians and Hamas in Damascus is excellent, to join the general meeting of the French official committee. Such an approach has never been seen before. In fact, Davutoğlu joined the meeting in Damascus during the French-Syrian negotiations recently. He kept the French advised and spoke about Hamas’s point of view. This was not enough; Babacan and his French colleague Kouchner teamed up in tight cooperation in New York and acted in unison to pass the cease-fire agreement through the Security Council. This was not enough, next Monday, French Foreign Minister Counselor Errera is coming to Ankara to meet with Foreign Minister Counselor Apakan.

As diplomatic departments put it, the cooperation between Turkey and France is called "Strategic Cooperation." The approach of the two countries toward the Middle East is very similar and frankly they behave like partners. A direct phone line exists now between Paris and Ankara. We can call it a line of close contact. Sarkozy does not say it out loud but he has just started to understand Turkey’s contributions to the EU in a concrete way.
